One week later ....
Well you can't accuse me of talking the talk and not walking the walk, Saturday morning came and I got two sheets of MDF, a coffee and off I went....
Amazing what you can do with a saw, well a circular saw, a jig saw and a router.
Took all of about 3 hours to cut and assemble.
It's a slightly downsized unit, by a few inches in both depth and width.
That's as far as I can go till I get the joystick, I need that in my hands to figure exactly where to place the panel that will hold it.
I can start on the paint work to an extent, and a few other bits .
Meanwhile......
All this is about retro arcade games, so let's hop to downloading what will be the heart of this baby :-)
I am going to use MAME
It's an emulator, that is free and it works really well.
There is a Windows version and a Mac version.
I used the Mac version first, Windows users be ready to be well pissed off !
For the Mac simply download the Mac version, unpack it, just click on it, and run it by clicking on the MAME icon.
It will open a nice window, which will display all of your loaded games, simply click on the game of your choice and instant happiness. You can also adjust sound, graphic and other parameters in the right hand box with just the click of the mouse, easy peesy .
By default there are no games installed, more about that later......
Windows users, simply download the Windows version of MAME, install it just by clicking on the install icon.
Then go to Start, click on Run, type in "cmd", move to the directory where MAME is installed ( most Windows users will never have used the Command Prompt, and will need a lesson on how to change to a directory and will more than likely run scared at the mere sight of Command Prompt, enjoy!!!), then type "mame name of game you want to play" and if your in luck a game may start !
You have to know the exact name of the game you want to start or forget it, which is a bit of a pain, there is no list like in the Mac.
So you have to open up the file where your games are stored, clock the name of the game, go back to the Command Prompt and type it in exactly as it is.....
Or use Easy Mame, a very cool front end for Mame that I will cover later on.
It's got a lot of neat features that are worth covering in a little detail
Regardless , we got no games. This is not good!
So we need to get some don't we, head on over to here
They got zillions of games , go through the listings that go on and on and on, download games till your eyes pop out!
However for some reason that I neither know nor care about , many don't work.
So download , check it out, if it works great, if not no big deal, there are so many it's not funny.
Enjoy :-)
