So what is Asterisk ? Asterisk is a full featured soft PBX. So now you know !
OK, for the one person at the back .....
A PBX is a Private Branch eXchange, it really should be a PBE, but I guess PBX is nerdier!
A PBX is something every office has, it's a dedicated bit of hardware that allows you to have all the internal phone extensions that you have in an office.
It's just a bit of hardware that controls the phone system, can be an expensive one at that.
You can purchase one off the shelf from the many companies that make them, but it's got to be configured to suit your particular needs by an engineer.
Once setup that's it, your getting the engineer back to rejig it should you need to change the configuration.
A soft BPX is just a software version that will run on a standard PC.
So rather than having a dedicated hardware PBX, you have a standard PC running Asterisk and you have the same thing.
Don't go asleep on me just yet :-)
Asterisk is totally cool, sure it's a telecommunications thingy , but you can do fun stuff with it !
How about calling anywhere in the world from your mobile/ cell phone for the price of a local call ?
How about having your house split up into extensions, pretty handy and lot's of other fun stuff, how about free wardialing :-)
It's uber nerd stuff to setup and configure, but not rocket science.
A complete tutorial this is not, just a brief run through, with some handy links at the end.
